First of all, don't use a box dye because the developers are not strong enough to highlight hair. Go to a real beauty supply, such as Sally Beauty. you cant do professional highlights on yourself! i would pay to have them done. its worth it. youll risk it being bloched and orange!
make sure you get a pretty good brand (the loreal stuff usualy works for me and i'm medium brown) and then check it periodically. however its been a while since i've done my own highlights, going to a pro is your best bet.
The products that are offered over the counter are not as good as what the professionals use. You might actually require a second application to get rid of the orange color if you use an OTC product. I agree with SarahMar above that you should get it done by a professional, it is well worth the money and you will be pleased with the effects.
